How much does root canal treatment cost in the UK?
The median published price for root canal treatment in the UK is £550. That is the middle of 642 prices read off the fee pages of 244 practices on 10 August 2026. One in ten publish under £300 and one in ten publish over £950.
Root canal treatment clears the infected nerve out of a tooth and seals the space. The price follows the number of canals, which is why a front tooth is the cheapest and a molar the dearest. Most teeth then need a crown, which is a separate bill.
The published market, end to end
Every practice that publishes a price for root canal treatment is one tick on this line. Where the ticks bunch up is where the market agrees.
Each tick is one hundredth of the published market, for one tooth.

What the range covers
Two quotes that look far apart are often two different treatments. These are the splits practices price separately, measured on the same fee pages.
| Type | Cheapest tenth | Median | Dearest tenth | Prices read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Molar | £395 | £600 | £975 | 310 |
| Premolar | £395 | £550 | £900 | 153 |
| Incisor or canine | £300 | £487 | £871 | 159 |
A price can appear in more than one row where a practice names both, so the rows do not sum to the total.
What moves the price
- Which tooth. Molars have three or four canals and cost the most on every fee page that splits them.
- Whether a specialist endodontist does it, which prices above a general dentist.
- Retreatment of a root canal that has failed, which costs more than the first attempt.
- The crown afterwards, which is nearly always needed and nearly always billed apart.
“From £581” is not a discount. 1,033 practices advertise this treatment as a “from” price, and the middle of those headline figures is £581 against a median firm price of £550. The word buys the practice room, not you.
On the NHS
Band 2
£76.60
in England, whole course
Everything in Band 1, plus fillings, root canal treatment and extractions.
Root canal treatment is Band 2 on the NHS. If the tooth then needs a crown in the same course of treatment, the charge moves up to Band 3 rather than adding a second bill.
Privately, the same work has a median published price of £550.
NHS charges apply in England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own. Figures from nhs.uk, read on 11 August 2026.
Questions people ask
- Does the price include the crown?
- Almost never. Published root canal prices are for the root treatment alone, and a crown on top is priced separately.
- Why is a molar root canal so much more?
- More canals, harder access, longer appointment. The per-tooth figures above are measured from the practices that publish them separately.
- Is it cheaper to take the tooth out?
- Up front, yes. Then the gap wants filling, and a bridge or an implant costs several times either. Compare the whole path rather than the first appointment.
How these prices were measured
This page rests on 642 prices for root canal treatment, part of 39,049 prices read from 1,481 fee pages across 983 UK practice websites on 10 August 2026.
- Every figure comes off a practice's own public fee page. Nothing is a survey, an estimate or a model.
- One price counts once per fee page. A chain's branches all carry the group's list, and counting each branch would let one price list decide the market.
- Prices written as "from £X" are counted separately, not mixed in. That figure is the cheapest case a practice leads with, and it reads the market low.
- Prices covering a whole arch or a full set of teeth are left out of a per-tooth figure, because they sit at the top of every distribution.
- Only the 10th percentile, the median and the 90th are published. The extremes of a scraped corpus are where a mis-read price lands, and no single row can move a percentile.
- Lines that name a different job are dropped per treatment. Re-cementing a crown is not the price of a crown, and an extra whitening syringe is not the price of whitening.
