UK price guide · read 10 August 2026

How much does wisdom tooth removal cost in the UK?

The median published price for taking out a wisdom tooth in the UK is £375. That is the middle of 114 prices read off the fee pages of 99 practices on 10 August 2026. One in ten publish under £250 and one in ten publish over £550.

A wisdom tooth that has come through straight comes out like any other tooth. One that is lying against its neighbour, or still under bone, needs a surgical approach, and that is the price most people are quoted.

The published market, end to end

Every practice that publishes a price for taking out a wisdom tooth is one tick on this line. Where the ticks bunch up is where the market agrees.

What moves the price

  • How the tooth is lying. Impacted teeth are surgical and priced accordingly.
  • Upper or lower. Lower wisdom teeth sit in denser bone and are the harder job.
  • Sedation. Practices list it as its own line when they offer it.
  • Whether an oral surgeon does the work rather than the practice dentist.

“From £373” is not a discount. 150 practices advertise this treatment as a “from” price, and the middle of those headline figures is £373 against a median firm price of £375. The word buys the practice room, not you.

On the NHS this is Band 2. Hospital removal after a dentist's referral carries no charge, but the wait is the reason many people pay privately.

Privately, the same work has a median published price of £375.

Questions people ask

Can I get wisdom teeth out on the NHS?
Yes, where there is a clinical reason such as repeated infection. Removal purely because a tooth might cause trouble later was withdrawn from routine NHS treatment years ago.
Why do quotes vary so much for the same tooth?
Because two teeth described the same way are not the same job. Published prices run £250 to £550, and the top end is bone removal under sedation rather than a lift-and-out.

How these prices were measured

This page rests on 114 prices for taking out a wisdom tooth, part of 39,049 prices read from 1,481 fee pages across 983 UK practice websites on 10 August 2026.

  • Every figure comes off a practice's own public fee page. Nothing is a survey, an estimate or a model.
  • One price counts once per fee page. A chain's branches all carry the group's list, and counting each branch would let one price list decide the market.
  • Prices written as "from £X" are counted separately, not mixed in. That figure is the cheapest case a practice leads with, and it reads the market low.
  • Prices covering a whole arch or a full set of teeth are left out of a per-tooth figure, because they sit at the top of every distribution.
  • Only the 10th percentile, the median and the 90th are published. The extremes of a scraped corpus are where a mis-read price lands, and no single row can move a percentile.
  • Lines that name a different job are dropped per treatment. Re-cementing a crown is not the price of a crown, and an extra whitening syringe is not the price of whitening.
